Approval stage

An approval stage is a workflow stage whose type is approval. When an item enters it the engine opens an approval, and the item cannot leave through the approved transition until a decision is recorded with who and when.

Work, review, approval, gate and done are the five stage types. Approval is the one that is a decision, not a colour. A rejection or a request for changes sends the item to the rework stage the workflow names.

The person who decides can be a member or someone outside the workspace who uses a portal door. The decision is written to an append-only audit log.

Questions that keep coming up

Is an approval stage the same as a status called Approved?
No. A status can be typed by anyone. An approval stage refuses the exit until the engine has a recorded decision.
Can one workflow have two approval stages?
Yes. The campaign pack runs brand review and legal review as two separate approval stages in sequence.
Who can decide?
The roles named on the stage, or a person who holds a door that is allowed to decide that approval.
